CHARACTER NAME: Rei Suzumura (Knight title: ZERO the Silver-Fanged Knight)
SERIES: GARO - canon supplementary links for Chapter of the Black Wolf, Beast of the Midnight Sun, and Makai Senki

Once everything was over, Kouga then was asked to leave due to a binding contract he had entered with a creature known as Gajari – in order to escape and make it to the Makai Train in the first place, he had to agree to do a favor for Gajari so that he could teleport him right onto the Train. Rei and the others (Leo, Tsubasa, Jabi, Rekka, Shiguto, and Wataru) see him off before he says his good-byes to Kaoru, and the series closes showing Rei continuing to work as a Makai Knight.

An undisclosed amount of time later, Rei is tasked with taking out a Horror known as Ring that was attempting at making a commune for both humans and Horrors. This was seen as a problem mostly because of the nature of both groups as well as the fact that Ring was using humans that had nothing left to lose to come to the commune and had them ritualistically sacrificed to the Horrors living there in order to appease them. While working with two others on the case (the daughter of a Makai Knight that was only able to use his sword by way of grafting his arm bone into her own arm to be able to wield it and a drunkard Makai Priest), he was able to stop Ring before things got more out of hand. (tbh the miniseries is best for elaborating on character development and gratuitous shirtless training scene, there's really not much substance to it looking back on it oops)

CANON POINT: Post-BLACK BLOOD
AGE: if we go by the actor’s age at the time of filming, 26
APPEARANCE: Civilian attire, attire sans coat, and in armor

PERSONALITY: Rei actually goes through an interesting change in personality throughout the series. When we first meet him (and have no ideas of what his true intentions are), he seems a bit cocky and overconfident. However, we find that this apparent arrogance is well-justified, considering his martial arts skills (especially considering how quickly and easily he was able to overpower a group of thugs unarmed, even though some of them were armed with knives). He also seems to come off as a bit of a flirt, especially around Kaoru. He also apparently has quite the sweet tooth – shown multiple times.

But what we didn't realize until later that it's mostly a facade. Rei's real intentions and everything leading up to that point was so that he can get close to Kouga, who currently holds the title of “GARO”, and kill him, because he suspects that the Golden Knight was the one that murdered his father figure and his then-girlfriend. The tenacity and killing intent that Rei originally lacked during his training had become his main traits as a Knight. He tended to ignore Makai rules in order to mount his attacks, not caring about the later consequences, just the results.

Later on, however, and especially after Rei and Kouga find out that Barago's the one behind both the murders of Rei's family and Kouga's father, Rei became more of a foil for Kouga – talkative where Kouga's stoic, fairly expressive whereas Kouga is more deadpan unless moved to great emotions. he also seems to relax a bit now that he's not constantly on-guard.

The fact that he was able to snap Kouga out of his dark state also says a lot for how much Rei has grown to trust again after everything that's happened to him. He's still fairly laid-back and joking at the end of the whole KIBA incident, but he has taken his duties a lot more seriously now that Barago/KIBA has been dealt with. He was even willing to give up his opportunity to take revenge against Barago so that Kouga could go and save Kaoru from becoming Messiah's vessel, offering to fight GLUM in order to keep her from interfering.

All in all, Rei is a lot better at blending in with the rest of society than Kouga is, but he is still a warrior at heart and eventually grows to realize that there is more to his life than just living for revenge.

In Makai Senki, Rei’s highlight episodes reveal more aspects about his personality that weren’t really seen before in the series. In episode 6, when an old couple had begged for Rei to kill them, he bitterly replied that he “only cut down Horrors”. This is a major part of the Makai Knight honor code: humans are first and foremost the ones that need protecting, no matter what they had done beforehand. This shows that now that he had put his personal vendetta aside that he really does believe in the cod of conduct for the Makai Knights. Further evidence of this is in episode 8 when a temporally-displaced samurai had initiated a fight because he saw Rei fighting a Horror and wanted to fight a strong swordsman. During the fight, the samurai demands that Rei summons his armor, but Rei then tells him that he can’t summon his armor against a non-Horror.

Throughout the second season, we see that Rei, despite all his willingness to talk to people, is still the type that would very much prefer to not have others worry about him and as a result, he tends to be more of a loner when it comes down to it. However, this doesn’t mean that he will not help others if they need it: in actuality, Rei’s probably one of the most reliable allies that Kouga has throughout the series. He definitely cares, and he’s also one of the more outwardly emotional of the Makai Knight group, but he does prefer keeping others out of his business for reasons of safety more than anything else. This is only reinforced during the events of ZERO –BLACK BLOOD–, a miniseries highlighting a series of events centered around Rei and his fight against a seemingly benevolent Horror named Ring. The fact that Rei prefers to work alone is reinforced through the miniseries, though he begrudgingly lets a Makai Priest duo work with him. It's also interesting to note because afterward, and duding a flashback episode in Season 4, we find out that Rei had trained Kouga's son Raiga as a promise to his best friend to test Raiga as well as to show him the hardships of a Makai Knight to let the boy choose on his own if he wanted to continue down the same path his father took.

ABILITIES: As a Makai Knight, Rei has received training in both martial arts and swordplay alongside being educated on the edict and conduct of the position he was supposed to end up holding. He's a talented martial artist, and in civilian form, is stronger and faster than most humans. People raised to be Makai Knights also seem to have a mild ability to regenerate, as shown in one episode where Rei gets a cut on his cheek that heals itself after a couple hours and the fact that both Rei and Kouga get up time and time again after being beaten to hell and back during fights.

Rei's weapons are known as the Silver Wolf Swords [Ginrouken], and normally, they just look like a pair of short swords that he wields backhanded. When he goes into his armor form, they become curved like scimitars, and he also has the ability to put them together into one double-bladed weapon, which in some cases, he throws like a boomerang. Their name when he dons his armor and locks them together is literally translated as “Silver Fanged Silver Wolf Sword” [Ginga Ginrouken]

Rei also has what is known as a Madou Lighter, a special tool specifically catered to detect Horrors disguising themselves as humans, allow the Knights to read the orders they receive from their respective Watchdogs, and in some cases, activate what is known as Blazing Armament. The last one can only be done when a Makai Knight is in their armor, although both Rei and Kouga have been able to use this technique without the aid of the lighter. Blazing Armament is something like a power-up – it allows the user to use Madou Flames in order to increase their damage output by covering their swords and armor in flames. (Rei’s flames are blue, Kouga’s are green, Tsubasa’s are purple, etc)

His main power, and that of any Makai Knight, is to summon his armor. The armor itself [as well as Rei's swords] is made of what is called “Soul Metal”, and can only be wielded by those that have had sufficient training in handling it. Once mastered, the Metal reacts to the wielder's will, becoming light or heavy depending on the use. It actually explains why Rei’s able to put both swords together and toss them like a boomerang as mentioned earlier.

Anyway, so there's a significant increase in speed, strength, and stamina, but there is a catch – each Makai Knight can only be in their armor for a maximum of 99.9 seconds at a time, lest they get swallowed up by the armor and lose themselves to darkness. They can also be knocked out of their armor if they've received heavy enough injuries, and the wielders can prematurely terminate the use of the armor if they so desire.

POSSESSIONS:
Outfit (undershirt, button-down shirt, duster, glove, pants, shoes, glove, armbands – all in black)
